An Ontario winter is hard on hair. Cold, dry air outside, forced-air heating inside and hats all day can leave colour looking dull and ends feeling brittle. The good news: a few small habits make a big difference. Here is what our colourists at L.A. Hair Design recommend.

1. Wash a little less, and with cooler water

Hot water opens the hair cuticle and lets colour escape faster. Rinse with lukewarm or cool water, and if you can, stretch the time between washes.

2. Use colour-safe professional products

Shampoos made for coloured hair are gentler on your tone. Ask us which of the professional brands we carry suits your colour.

3. Book a deep conditioning treatment

Winter dryness shows up first on lightened hair. A deep conditioning protein and oil mask treatment in the salon restores moisture and shine. Pair it with our aromatherapy scalp and neck massage for an extra-relaxing visit.

4. Turn down the heat when you style

Blow dryers, flat irons and curling irons add to the dryness. Use a heat protectant every time, lower the temperature, and let your hair air dry partly before you blow it out.

5. Watch for brassiness

Blonde and lightened hair can turn warm or brassy over the winter. A toning appointment between colour visits brings it back to your shade. If the colour has gone further off course, see our colour correction page.

6. Protect your ends

Scarves, collars and hats rub against your hair. A trim every few months removes split ends before they travel up the strand.
